To expand on the effectiveness of marketing, I thought it might help to share a graph of our relative growth from month-to-month for Sifter’s first two years. The top is our revenue growth, and the bottom is the corresponding traffic. The majority of spikes are from blog posts that made the rounds on the internet.
The large bump in traffic in March of 2009 is from our Daring Fireball RSS feed sponsorship. The corresponding revenue growth seems to indicate that the traffic was high quality. We would probably consider advertising there again, but we’ve found that our returns on advertising go down noticeably if we advertise in the same place multiple times. It’s been much more effective for us to advertise in a variety of places. Well, that and the cost of sponsoring has doubled since we last advertised there.
