What is the most rewarding medium for promoting the business, other than your blog.

The answer is the blog and word of mouth. We’ve explored a lot of different marketing avenues at this point, and nothing has come close to the effectiveness of blogging and taking good care of our existing customers.

Some things like FusionAds and sponsoring the Daring Fireball RSS feed were helpful early on, but in terms of quality traffic and attention, our analytics show very clearly that the large majority of our new customers come from organic sources like blogging and word-of-mouth.

That said, the key isn’t to blog with the expectation of any kind of return. It’s simple karma. Focus on helping others by giving them information, and one way or another it will come back to you. As a side effect, one of the best things about writing in general is that it forces you to clarify your thoughts. You can’t really understand something until you’ve tried to put it into words and explain it to someone else.
